RE: Forced into Vista

More and more new hardware is coming out without XP drivers. You can blame compaq/hp but they don't make the chipsets, they just package them.

RE: Motorhome mufflers

Where does your exhaust exit? Having it exit out the sides can make it louder in the RV. Exit out the rear, with as long and straight a pipe as possible. It would be best if the tail pipe ended beyond the rearmost part of the RV. Also make sure the exhaust ends pointing slightly downward.

RE: 100 mpg pickup

What always gives me chuckles it coupling "fuel saving" hybrid technology with gas guzzlers having the 25%.
What makes more sense. Improving the efficiency of a tiny car that already gets 35mpg to 45mpg or improving the efficiency of a large vehicle that only gets 15mpg to 25mpg?;)

RE: 100 mpg pickup

Its funny, every one of these posts gets two types of answers:
Curmudgeons. It will never work, it will cost too much, it won't be useful, its not needed.
Technolovers. Its great. We need this. Technology will save us. Etc.
The reality is that neither is wrong or right. Most of these things are so over hyped its easy to read though them and see that marketing is beating technology. But much of this over the top technology is going to move us in the right direction. The very best internal combustion engines are somewhere around 40% efficient. The small ones used in mobile applications are lucky to get 25% efficient.
You can't look at that number and not see room for improvement.

RE: towing four wheels down

Regardless of what the dealer tells you, warranty have to follow federal law, specifically the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. They can not deny you warranty because you towed the vehicle 4 down, or because you had the vehicle modified to be towed 4 down. They can only deny you warranty if they can reasonably prove that what you did caused the problem.

RE: Are there any DP made that don't have air brakes since 2000

What is better about Air vs Hydraulic? In my very limited experience I found air brakes lacked the feel of hydraulics.

RE: no rinse dish detergent

Perhaps you could try something like:
http://www.drugstore.com/qxp145456_333181_sespider/seventh_generation/natural_liquid_dish_soap_lemongrass_and_clementine_zest.htm
I think we will try it. Its hard to get the soap off of glasses some times (takes lots of rising) and I just hate soapy drinking water.

RE: Smoking with kids in the car a $100 fine in California!

Keep that thought in mind the next time you see a drunk on the road. Just as, if not more lethal, than second hand smoke.
And magically enough it is already illegal to drive while drunk. If caught and you have children in the car you can also be charged with child endangerment. As it damn well should be.
My only problem with DUI laws is they should be broader. The problem is alcohol, its bad driving. If you are driving badly due to drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep, poorly maintained car, emotional issues, or whatever, you are just as deadly and the penalty should be the same.

RE: Smoking with kids in the car a $100 fine in California!

As far as the person who suggested that in the fifties and sixties we abused our children, beat our wives, and assorted other shenanigans...where in the world did you grow up?
Well martial rape wasn't illegal until 1979. As for lynchings of blacks in the 50's and 60's, I guess reading isn't your strong suit.
I'd sure like to go back to those wonderful days. Of course only with your rose colored glasses.

RE: Smoking with kids in the car a $100 fine in California!

Wrong!! Sounds like nanny state, cradle to grave. Shouldn't parents protect children instead of the government?
Yes they should. But if you are smoking and driving you aren't protecting your children. The people (government) have a responsibility to protect those who can not protect themselves. Thats why we don't allow minors to drink or smoke and why we don't allow parents to mentally, physically or sexually abuse children.
If all parents were looking out for their childs well being this law would never have been though of.

RE: Smoking with kids in the car a $100 fine in California!

Yep more government to protect you from youself.
Wrong.
This is government protecting children. The children don't get the choice of who their parents are, but should at least be allowed to get a healthy start.
My mother smoked until I was 30, but she didn't smoke in the car when I was a kid.

RE: Vista

Yep, those that bought a computer with RDAM (Rambus) got sold a bill of goods. Its way cheaper to just by a new barebone system than that darn Rambus ram.
I threw away a 512m P4 system for that exact reason, too little memory to work well, to expensive to make it useful.

RE: Ducted Air Conditioning

I like the ducted. It allows me to cool the RV more evenly if I want, or cool certain areas better than others. I do think that ducted is slighly less efficient even in the best systems, but I don't think it is enough to make a big difference.
In some of the larger Motorhomes and Trailers I've seen that didn't have ducted AC, I really wondered how the AC that was 20 feet away from the bedroom would have any chance of cooling it on a hot Florida day.

RE: Headers: Thorley Vs. Banks Vs. Gibson

Tri-Y's are usually recommended for engines that see a lot of RPM range. Long tube 4 into 1 are usually for engines that see a lot of their life at a single, higher RPM.
I would think that for most RV's long 4 into 1's would work best. Stainless vs coated steel? If I were keeping the RV forever I would want stainless. Otherwise well made coated steel (something like Jet Hot) will last quite a while.
The next trick is to keep the exhaust as straight as possible, and ensure that any bends are very smooth. Many pipe benders badly restrict the pipe where they bend it, spending the bucks on some mandrel bet u-bends can really help.
Also, while you are working to get the engines exhaust to leave better, ensure the engine is getting enough air. A cool air kit can really help.

RE: American Cars, trucks, vans

I've owned and worked on them all. Every manufacture has made some pure crap, and has issues. Mazda had issues with the RX8, Honda had transmission issues on the second gen odyssey. We currently own two japaneese makes, a Honda Odyssey and a Toyota Matrix. No mini-van compares to the odyssey, and trust me in 2005 I drove them all. Perhaps now it has competition. With that said, its not perfect. The matrix is a great little car. I could have gotten the Pontiac Vibe (same car) but the Toyota dealer had a model with the limited features I wanted (manual transmission, power windows/locks, AC, Cruise Control).
Next time? Who knows, it depends on who makes the best vehicle that meets my needs. If I won a volt in a raffle I would keep it!

Congradulations!
Few people have the nerve to proclaim to the world that they are a crook.
Some are even a tiny bit ashamed.
Wow. A crook huh? A bit harsh don't you think, eh?

RE: Ameri-Camp Out of Business

The biggest issue with owning an orphan RV is that you lost your factory warranty. The second issue is the loss in resale. Most RV makers don't make much, they just connect parts. And the companies that make the parts (suburban, Atwood, Trimark, Winegard, etc) are still in business.

RE: Dell site shows some laptops with Vista, 64 bit

For most (99%) of the folks 32bit would be fine. For home users 32bit is fine for 99.99999% of them. If you are some power user, using an app that works better with say 6gb of RAM and supports 64bit then perhaps. If you want to run several virtual 32bit machines inside of vista then perhaps.
